We had a nice change of pace this past weekend when we packed up the car and headed north up the mighty Mississippi to stay with, and boat with, great friends. Saturday was a gorgeous day with blue skies and puffy white clouds and the most pleasant eighty degrees I’ve ever felt. The water was so still and blue compared to the churning river that we are used to in our city, and we headed north from Dubuque, through the lock and up to a nice little sand beach where the kids played for a few hours. E was reunited with some old friends and they caught right up with where they had left off. She was quite taken with the whole boating experience – especially the cabin underneath and all the little window hatches to pop up in.
We count ourselves fortunate to have friends like these – friends that make the extra effort to travel to be together, friends that are easy to play and dine and relax with, friends that can live in different states with different jobs and different politics and different opinions and still laugh at all the same jokes from year to year. (And some of the jokes aren’t really that funny…)
Here’s hoping that we can continue to get together and unwind for years to come…and I vote for unwinding on water like this every time.
