scenes from a sunday

Posted on April 27, 2009 by thirdstoryies

It was another whirlwind weekend for us, but we did manage to get a bit of downtime this afternoon. It’s been so warm we got out the backyard pool (which, at her size, is really just a glorified bucket) and I attempted to get a bit of studying for my upcoming exam done while sitting “poolside”. The lure of the weeds overtaking my backyard was too much after an hour or so, so I attacked those as best I could, considering I’m not doing a whole lot of bending these days. And I found that if you crop your photos just right you can get at least one shot that might rival my favorite garden’s splendor.

Fine…who am I really kidding? The yard is a mess, but we’ve bigger projects going on right now than that one…

Like batting practice with this baby bat from a few years back, and the pool balls. I pitched from my chair, which seemed to suit us both just fine. And here’s a shot of the belly and what little “lap” I have left for holding things.

And while we swam and read and weeded and batted the afternoon away at a leisurely pace outside, someone else was inside working on hardwood floor patching. I’m not quite sure what the entire process is, all I know is that it is painstaking and tedious. This room had the most water damage when we purchased the house (portions of the roof had been missing at some point) and the floor had gaps between boards that a toe or two could have slipped into. We’ve ignored this for years because the room has had cardboard down over it and stuff stacked on it since we moved in. When the cardboard came up one day a few weeks back E walked by and said “Holy cow – that room has wood floors! And all this time I thought you had just put in cardboard ones.”

So all in all, not a bad way to spend the afternoon – in the sun, with the kid, enjoying the background music of the saw and hammer through the open windows.
