page turners (updated)

Posted on May 14, 2010 by thirdstoryies

I used to have a sad list of books that we were reading in the sidebar, but I never really updated it.  The real truth of the matter is that I wasn’t reading a whole lot of books – funny how two children, a job, and a million other daily tasks kind of push reading for pleasure to a dusty bedside stack.  I might pick up a book to read and find myself sleeping a couple of sentences in.  I think months went by that I never actually closed a book or turned out a bedside lamp on my own.  My husband always found me stuck with drool to the unread pages.

I’m doing better now.  I can actually stay awake for a whole chapter or two.  Plus E’s books are getting so much better.  Not that I didn’t enjoy the picture books.  I did.  We still love them and read them all the time.  But we are so utterly taken with the chapter books out there now.  And I’m perfectly happy to never read another Berenstain Bear book again.  (She can read those on her own, and still does.)
The latest page turner we’ve enjoyed is The Magician’s Elephant – what an absolutely lovely book.  I would read chapter after chapter in it aloud, and then E would read more on her own so the next night I’d have to catch myself up and move forward.  I was truly sorry when it was done.  We’re now deep into the second book in the Sisters Grimm series – a book with super long chapters and lots of fairy tale based adventures.  We’re a bit hooked on that as well.
So I’ve decided to update the sidebar with images of books that we are reading or have recently enjoyed.  Feel free to hover over the images or click on them to find out more information on them.  And if you are reading any page turners yourself, please drop a note in the comment section and let us know about them.  Our next house project (along with a new flat roof) is some bookshelves.  We’ve got a lot of page turners around here.
