It’s the big Mardi Gras Celebration in the neighborhood which means those of us without off street parking are stuck in (or out) all day. The roads fill up by nine a.m. and we hunker down and watch the crowds go by. This year the deli stayed open despite the fact that it’s their slowest day of the year – everyone bypasses it for the celebration a few blocks down. Which means we got a seat – and a window seat at that. This place is so popular we’ve rarely sat at a table in the eight years it’s been here. We just grab the food and take it back home, or to the curb, or the front yard.
F channels Louis Prima above, and shares a big dog with E and my favorite sandwich with me – the Memphis Stax. It’s not on the menu, but they’ll make it for you if you ask (BBQ w/ cole slaw on top). And once they know you (it won’t take long) they’ll make it for you before you even get up to order it.
Happy Mardi Gras to you – whether you’re celebrating inside or out.
Love the name of the sandwich! Stax Records is a must see if you come to Memphis.
OH how I loved Mardi Gras in STL. Sounds like a fun day.
