there’s my girl

Posted on April 3, 2012 by thirdstoryies
E’s been pretty excited for this month’s issue of Feast Magazine.  She frequently reads the copies that we have laying around the house, but April’s issue is special because it includes this photo (making bagels from scratch) and a link to this feature.
For the month of April the magazine is focusing on local leaders in the effort to feed (and teach) children good food.  E’s culinary arts instructor extraordinaire kicks off this series.  If you have a moment, check out the article.  And if you have a few minutes more, watch the video below (produced by a school parent) – it includes some of our dearest friends and talks about the great things going on in the kitchen and around the table at our school.  This program is one of the things we love most about this place – and that’s saying something because there is a lot to love.
If you’ve ever had the privilege of sitting around the table with F, you know she’s going to tear this place up in a few years.  She’s a natural born foodie and inspires us all to eat better.  And our whole family is a family that cooks.  I love knowing that it happens all day long – and not just around the dinner table.

thank you so much for posting this video! I watched it with my daughters and we all loved learning about the program. oh–so jealous! we are in u-city school district and don’t have ANYTHING like that going on. I wonder if there is some way I could bring a small piece of it to my world. maybe just starting at home! thanks again!

Glad you liked it. It is a great program, and it reflects a growing trend in lunchrooms in districts all over the place. It works well at our school because it’s so small – that’s a definite advantage. But there are hurdles at larger scales – amount of mouths to feed, kitchen design, code restrictions, food and prep safety, food allergies…

      But it’s a start…
