friday finds (late edition)

Posted on September 10, 2012 by thirdstoryies

The back room is slowly coming together – and on an exciting front – we’ll have some shelves in a few weeks, as well as an extended desk area.  You’ll notice I don’t have too many wide angle shots in here – the room’s perimeter is full of stacks and stacks of things – mostly books from E’s room waiting on the new library shelves downstairs, and now stacks of tech related things in anticipation of converting our former TV cabinet into an entry storage wardrobe.  Just in time for fall!  I’ll try to get a few pictures in here soon, but it’s a tricky room to photograph when it’s a sunny day – it’s south facing and gets a lot of light, and we currently don’t have any light control at the windows.

I’ve been eyeing some different options for footrests in this room for awhile.  In the model I built of the room I used a giant woven ottoman that I liked from CB2.  I thought we might use some sort of narrow side table in here for drinks and snacks, but the more we’ve used the room, the less I’ve wanted to add tables.  So I started looking for a sturdier coffee table / ottoman – something you could throw a glass or bowl on, but also put your feet up on.  And since the room isn’t large, and it has several different roles to play, I didn’t really want a large piece of furniture that wasn’t easy to move around or get out of the way.  I kept coming back to the storage ottoman from Crate & Barrel, but the price was bothering me a bit.  I loved the idea of a pair of them=double the price.  The top flips over to form a tray, and the inside is the perfect place to store the minimal amount of TV related things we own.  They are leather, and they come in a bunch of colors – but again, a little pricey.

Problem was, there weren’t a lot of other options out there at a much lower price.  Target carries a knock off, but it’s only $20 cheaper, and it looks way cheaper.  And the black and the dark brown leather options weren’t doing it for me.  Some places carry fabric covered cubes, but I knew in the end that this would be way more durable – particularly if someone knocks over one of those glasses.

E and I went out Friday night in search of a couple pair of pants that actually fit her stretching legs, and we stopped into Crate & Barrel on the way home.  I was hoping to get a fabric sample to bring home, but they were out of the smoke color.  The store offers thirty days to think about your purchase and then return it if you aren’t satisfied, so we brought one home (in the rain) and unwrapped it the next day.

We still haven’t unwrapped the legs yet, but they match the chair legs perfectly.  And the stone color is a really beautiful warm gray – it looks absolutely awesome with the back accent color on the wall, and great with the chairs.  I’m really trying to get away from all the blah-brownish colors in the house, and I’m really conscious of not bringing out the browns in the canvas colored material of the chairs.    This color is perfect.  I think we’re sold, but we’re going to have to hold out for a second one a bit.  Maybe a Christmas present to each other – or from the one who always gets the footrest to the one who never does.  Hmmm, wonder who that might be…

It also looks great with one of the contenders for the rug we’re considering.  So score.  I like a Friday where I find a good match all around.

Hope you had a nice Friday – and a nice weekend.  It could not have been more lovely here.  And to think I was bad mouthing September weather in this fair city…
