admiring: for the holidays

Posted on November 26, 2012 by thirdstoryies
Traveling in the car for so many hours this past weekend meant I had lots of time to think.  One of those things I thought about was cool ideas for the gift giving this holiday – even if they weren’t specifically gifts that I am going to be giving.  So I’ll feature some of these in my sporadic “admiring” posts and maybe – if one strikes your fancy – you can take it from there.

First up – maybe you’ll remember the mason jar sippy cups we made for F’s second birthday.  I got the idea from Rebekah’s blog, and they were a big hit with the kids.  We have several left over, and use them a couple of times a week.  I really love the way they look and they do keep the occasional errant elbow from taking a nice, normal family dinner into a feast of sobbing over spilled milk.  But F’s still a bit of pain with a straw.  It works well for awhile, but then it becomes a toy and there’s less drinking and more playing, and that eventually leads to more sobbing.

Enter Cuppow.  Sophisticated coffee-like lids for your mason jars.  And now they have some with straw holes as well, so you can start out strong with a straw and then take it away when dinner starts to go downhill.  And the Cuppow website says you can buy them locally at Maven – which reminds me, I need to stop in there sometime soon and restock the soap larder.

Who am I kidding?  I would so put my coffee into one of these.  But I drink my coffee black, so it’s not quite as swirly and attractive as, say, iced coffee with cream.  I think I might be affected by the transparency and want to drink exciting drinks with floating limes in them.  Or maybe that strained butternut squash juice or whatever that is on the left.

This reminds me to reveal this secret to you – I secretly love glass fronted refrigerators just for the idea that I’d need to curate my inner refrigerator on a daily basis.  Please don’t judge me for this.

And then, of course, there’s this:  The need to (at times) warm up – or keep hidden – the innermost contents of the jar.  There are plenty of etsy sellers happy to sell you something like this.  One Robin Road was one of my favorites – check it out here.

And to my friend, JH, the lady of Socktapus fame – here’s an idea for your happy holidays.  I promise I’m not hinting (at least not too loudly.)

Gift idea:  Mason Jar + Cuppow + Knitted Cozy + drink mix or gift card to drink establishment / coffee shop to stash inside or recipe for favorite hot chocolate mix or favorite cocktail printed on tag around the lid

I will be “borrowing” your gift idea for the teacher/coach/tutor section of my Christmas list. Thank you!
