I’m so excited for Central Library to reopen downtown. Check out this video filmed with the third grade class from E’s school. The renovation is amazing – the girls are going to go nuts. Find out more about the opening on December 9th here.
Which part did you like best? What are you most excited about?
(I loved the guy’s story about his grandfather taking him there whenever they were in the city. I also loved this quote: “It was the notion that, as a free people, we had the access to the information to help keep us free”.)
Update: I’m adding this video tour as well with more of the architectural history of the building.

I love the idea that a beautiful building raises the expectations for the people who enter it. I think it’s so true–don’t we all behave better when we are surrounded by beautiful things? And what’s more beautiful than high ceilings, big windows, and rows and rows of books?
My favorite part might have been at the very end when the little girl in pink tights is literally skipping through the stacks. So cute. I’m also excited to see these all-marble bathrooms.
That’s one of E’s close friends at school – I love her too – especially when she says pretty much all she does is… Read!
It is true about the architecture of a space influencing expectations – which is why I always thought it so unfortunate when I had high school english and math courses in portable trailers. Sigh.
I just found out I get to go on the AIA tour today. So excited! I went through just before the reno and the old glass block floors of the stacks were amazing (and really scary! Not to mention the huge space at the actual stack bookshelves where you would drop something and plunge it forever into the basement). Thanks for sharing this video. Super cool! Cheers – CT
My husband’s going as well – wish I wasn’t so busy at work today.
