pest peeves

Posted on June 21, 2013 by thirdstoryies

I work really hard and not letting little things annoy me.  There are enough big things to worry about, and an overabundance of wonderful things (big and small) to celebrate each day.

But I hate mosquitoes.

I hate feeling them hovering around me.  I hate the way their bites swell up into itchy red welts on me that last for days.  I hate slathering myself up with chemicals that kill them (because what the heck are those chemicals doing to me?), but I also hate thinking of the little bloodsuckers dining on me if I’m not completely sprayed up.  I hate the feeling of the sprays, and I don’t like having to shower them off the second that we come indoors.  I really hate when I smash one and can tell that it’s already feasted.  Blech.

For such a tiny little thing, they really kind of rule our lives.  We don’t freely travel between indoors and outdoors because the act of spraying up and rinsing down multiple times a day is really a chore.  We rarely just step outside to sit a spell – for a couple of moments with a cup of coffee or a new magazine.  Even when we go out to water the herbs we dance around to try and keep them at bay.  And I also get sort of nutso about the doors being closed as we move in and out – carting in groceries from the street or packing the car for a camping trip – because they hover around the doors and then get inside and bite you when you are off your guard and unprotected.

In my future backyard / frontyard dreams, I have grand plans for mosquito control – screening and fans and the like.  But in the interim, I’m very seriously looking at some of the mosquito capturing options out there, and I’m reading and hearing positive things about the Mega-Catch Mosquito Traps.  They have a small one that would work well in our yard (which is certainly small) – maybe one for the front and one for the back.  If you have any experience with mosquito catching gear or techniques I’d love to hear about them.  Or you can just moan and complain if you’d like.

Otherwise, this might be me:

One Labor Day weekend we were in Portland for my great-aunt and -uncle’s 50th wedding anniversary. Their daughter had a party at her house–glass patio doors thrown open to the summer evening, people milling around and moving from the huge deck to the living room and back again. It was amazing.

And there were NO mosquitos. Evidently there are very few mosquitos in Oregon? It’s not really an issue there? My mind was blown.

I always say that my blood is like crack cocaine for mosquitos because I’ll have ten bites for every one that David gets–and I get the big itchy welts, too. They are truly the bane of summer here. David has decided to treat our yard with a spray which I hate because chemicals, rain water, etc. and yet spraying down ourselves with said chemicals (and then washing them down the drain in the shower) is no more appealing.

I hope your trap works. And then I’ll buy one too.
