Shelves in the back room, shelves in the front room. Shelves going up all over the place around here.
My parents rolled into town on Thursday and since then we’ve been busy. We laid out the shelves above Wednesday night and M began securing them. We used the elfa system from the Container Store, but we had to have custom laminate shelves made to fit the sizes of our walls. The house is old and a little crooked, so custom also helps that out a bit. Next step in here is to sand and refinish some additional pine boards we’ve saved to make a full length desk that will span across whole back wall. The spacing above is not the final spacing I just realized. Guess I haven’t photographed it yet with the final layout.
This is the (future) fireplace enclosure below (images here). I wish I had photographed it yesterday because it was kind of exciting to see the framing for the fireplace even if we aren’t installing it yet. For now, this paneling will be there – sometime down the road we’ll cut the hole and warm our tootsies up in front of a real fire.
Platform framing started this morning, then I headed out of the house with my mom and the girls to the book fair. When we got home…
…this much more was done. At this moment, all the bookshelf units are installed to the ceiling, and I’ve vacuumed the floor and E’s mopping right now. I’ll photograph things tomorrow when the light is better.
Still a lot to be done – scribing finish panels and installing trim, and gobs and gobs and gobs of painting. My dad primed all the adjustable shelves and they are hanging out in the basement. But there are still cabinet doors to paint, and all of these cabinets too. Merry Christmas! Here’s a paintbrush. But still – hooray for parents and husbands and everyone. Lots of drawing and planning and scheming and modeling and saving and building going on to get this far. It’s like I can see a glimpse of an organized life, and I like the way that’s looking.
And hooray for Book Fairs to fill the shelves! Thanks to everyone that stopped by today, and remember it’s going on tomorrow too. Oliver Jeffers will be there to meet and sign books at 12:30 – but the fair runs all afternoon.
