Oomph. That’s the sound I made as I drug myself out of bed this morning and sat down in the chair to fire up the computer for a second. It was an odd sounding noise to escape my lips, considering I feel like I have very little oomph to spare. What a week. Just back from vacation and all that transition entails. School started, M traveled for work, and I attempted to not only clean the house and do party prep each night, but I also got the bright idea to knock out a few lingering projects around here. I’ve carried a fairly long to-do list around all week, and I failed to add sleeping to the list.
Last night’s list included red velvet cake – two batches. I made it with beets, because giant-big-fat-yuck at the idea of dumping that much red food coloring into a perfectly good chocolate cake. Our favorite red velvets have been at SweetArt and the now gone Veruca, and I’m quite sure the red dye went nowhere near either one of those. So Wednesday night was beet roasting night, and last night was baking.
Tonight I’ll turn E and her cousin loose on the decorating, and I’ll see you on the flip side of the weekend (hopefully a bit more rested). Hope this Friday finds you well – as always, drop me a line with what you’re up to if you’d like. (Or if you want to come eat cake!)
Might I recommend beet powder next time?! It’s a lot easier, cheep, and gives things that beautiful color (though, not quite as bright). I’m trying to get a GF Red Velvet One Bite together…and I’ve done my share of experimentation. I found it at a natural grocer. All that said though…I don’t know why you don’t take home Mother of the Year awards EVERY year?! Lovely, fun party!!
Beet Powder! What a great idea. I’ll have to find some and try it out. I wonder if it would work to color things like icing. I went to the trouble of coloring the cake naturally, but then still had to use a few drops of red food dye to get the icing red for the bottom of the gumball machine.
Thanks for the great idea.
